I thought you might find it useful to have some information about references (refs) on wikipedia. These are important to validate your writing and inform the reader. Any editor can removed unreferenced material; and unsubstantiated articles may end up getting deleted, so when you add something to an article, it's highly advisable to also include a reference to say where it came from. Referencing may look daunting, but it's easy enough to do. Here's a guide to getting started. Good referenceseditA reference must be accurate, i.e. it must prove the statement in the text. To validate "Mike Brown climbed Everest", it's no good linking to a page about Everest, if Mike Brown isn't mentioned, nor to one on Mike Brown, if it doesn't say that he climbed Everest. You have to link to a source that proves his achievement is true. You must use Reliable sources, such as published books, mainstream press, authorised web sites, and official documents. Blogs, Myspace, Youtube, fan sites and extreme minority texts are not usually acceptable, nor is Original research, e.g. your own unpublished, or self-published, essay or research. Simple referencingeditThe first thing you have to do is to create a "Notes and references" section. This goes towards the bottom of the page, below the "See also" section and above the "External links" section. Enter this code:
The next step is to put a reference in the text. Here is the code to do that. It goes at the end of the relevant term, phrase, sentence, or paragraph to which the note refers, and after punctuation such as a full stop, without a space (to prevent separation through line wrap):

Note the square brackets around the URL. The format is [URL Title] with a space between the URL and the Title. If you do this the URL is hidden and the Title shows as the link. Use double apostrophes for the article title, and two single quote marks either side of the name of the paper (to generate italics). The date after The Guardian is the date of the newspaper, and the date after "Retrieved on" is the date you accessed the site – useful for searching the web archive in case the link goes dead. Wikilinks (double square brackets which create an internal link to a wikipedia article) function inside the ref tags. Dates are wikilinked so that they work with user preference settings. Citation templateseditYou may prefer to use a citation template to compile details of the source. The template goes between the ref tags and you fill out the fields you wish to. The second time you use the same reference in the article, you need only to create a short cut instead of typing it all out again:
You can then use the short cut as many times as you want. Don't forget the /, or it will blank the rest of the article! A short cut will only pick up from higher up the page, so make sure the first ref is the full one. Some symbols don't work in the ref name, but you'll find out if you use them. I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Kurt A Bippert, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. Notability of Kurt A Bippert
A tag has been placed on Kurt A Bippert, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Images for Kurt A Bippert
editSince Kurt A Bippert owns the images stated and has not given any permission to use them on Wikipedia, they'll have to be deleted unless 1) a very specific fair use criteria is asserted (see WP:FUC) or 2) it is released under the GFDL (something I doubt Kurt will agree to). Wikipedia cannot accept copyright violations, nor can it accept "Wikipedia-only use" licenses. ColourBurst 03:41, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I don't see how this is a constructive comment. Three different editors have proposed deletion for this article today, so I'm surprised and disappointed that you would make a pointed effort to summarily challenge my mental capacity and credibility as an editor (especially on someone else's talk page).
If you feel that this artist is notable and feel that the entry is important, the onus is on you to prove it. The article needs to clearly assert that notability and at present does not. It should not require other readers to "seek and...find" evidence of this notability. That's the whole point of having the article!
So look, I've already expressed an openness to the possibility that you can demonstrate notability and have offered advice on the article talk page as to making that happen. But to be honest, if I'd seen this pejorative comment first, I'd have thought twice about being helpful. Here's to a more civil discussion moving forward. Planetneutral 05:46, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
